ABOUT

CATHRINE HOPKINS

Cathrine obtained her Bachelor of Technology Degree in Musical Theatre (cum laude) from Tshwane University of Technology.

​

She is the first South African to be certified in Vocal Teacher Training under one of Broadway's leading vocal coaches, Justin Stoney at New York Vocal Coaching. 

​

In July 2020 Cathrine successfully completed the summer intensive programme in vocal pedagogy at the Contemporary Commercial Music Vocal Pedagogy Institute of Shenandoah Conservatory, Shenandoah University in Virginia USA.  During the intensive she attended workshops run by Dr Wendy LeBorge, Dr David Meyer, Marcia Rosenburg and Dr Kathryn Green. 

 

The international training and education that Cathrine has received has ensured that her coaching is in alignment with the latest vocal techniques and vocal pedagogue currently available in the world.

 

Cathrine has gone on to lecture at top musical theatre tertiary institutions, including The Waterfront Theatre School and the University of the Witwatersrand. She has a passion for developing young talent and has been affiliated with many schools, inspiring the love and skill of singing to young people.

Cathrine’s studio has had great success in the musical theatre industry of South Africa, with her students being cast in productions such as The Lion King (International Tour 2018/9), Chicago (Asia and South Africa Tour), Matilda (Asia Tour 2019), Into the Woods (2019), Rock of Ages (2018), The Sound of Music (International tour 2017/18), Avenue Q (2018), Cats (UK tour and Asia tour) ,Spamalot (2016) to name just a few.

As a musical director, Cathrine has worked for Hazel Feldman in relaunching the Globe Theatre, directed the national tour of the Rocky Horror Picture Show, as well as had a residency at the Peoples Theatre (Joburg Theatre), where she musically directed over 10 children's theatre productions.

​

As a performer, Cathrine began her career playing the lead role of Tracy Turnblad in the South African premiere of Hairspray, and her on-stage career has seen her tour Asia as part of various international musicals.

​

Cathrine’s ambition for the future is to continue to grow the discipline of Musical Theatre in South Africa through intensive and specialized vocal coaching of individuals and groups.
